Why Nutrition Matters for Your Success?

Fueling your body with the right nutrients is just as crucial as your study habits. Proper nutrition boosts your focus, improves memory, and provides the sustained energy you need to tackle a busy school schedule, sports, and extra-curriculars.

With the school year in motion, you may find yourself overwhelmed with classes, homework, sports and other commitments. To succeed in high stress times, caring for your basic needs like nutrition, becomes just as important as turning in a homework assignment. Here are five tips to help you effectively fuel your brain and body!

5 Tips to Power Your Brain and Body

  1. Prepare for the day ahead! Be aware of what each day will look like. Do you have practice after school? Maybe rehearsal for the school band? If your day looks like it will run late or you are using more energy than usual, pack a nutritious snack or two or a larger lunch!
  2. Make sure to hydrate! Summer vacation might be coming to a close but the summer heat is still lingering. Bringing a water bottle will help you stay hydrated on campus and at practice.
  3. Incorporate all major food groups into breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each food group (protein, fats and carbs) all have a purpose in our diet to maintain health and give your brain and body fuel so you can focus and learn.
  4. Have breakfast every day! Incorporating breakfast into your daily routine will help you focus in those early morning classes. As well as hold you over until the next time food is available at snack or lunch time.
  5. Add some fiber rich foods to your snacks and meals. Fiber is essential to the human body. It helps you feel fuller for longer as a well promotes a healthy gut. Fruits, vegetables, dried beans/legumes and whole grain breads/starches are good sources of fiber. For example: Apples and peanut butter or hummus and carrots are some options to consider.

While school is important, so is your physical and mental wellbeing. If you or anyone you know are experiencing mental health struggles please reach out to a community or school counselor. If you have further questions about fueling yourself or nutrition please reach out to Bay Area Nutrition.
