Understanding and Managing Type 2 Diabetes

Understanding and Managing Type 2 Diabetes

By Rebecca Sugumar, MS, RDN

Managing a diagnosis like Type 2 Diabetes can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Understanding how your body processes energy is the first step toward taking control of your health and living a vibrant, balanced life.

Type 2 Diabetes is a condition where your body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose (sugar) enter your cells to be used for energy. Without enough insulin or with insulin resistance, glucose stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells as effectively. This leads to a number of potential complications such as: Heart Disease, Kidney and Nerve Damage, Vision and Foot Problems.

Practical Tips for Daily Management

There is no one diabetes diet because we all have different needs. Below are some general recommendations, but it is important to practice what is best for you.

  • Eating regular meals and snacks throughout the day will help prevent major fluctuations in blood sugar levels
  • Combining fat and protein with carbohydrates and fiber slows down digestion and allows for a slower and more stable release of sugar into the blood
  • Being mindful of portions and carbohydrate intake helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.

Other Things to Consider:

  • Prioritize sleep. Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep can worsen blood sugar control.
  • Practice stress management. Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, causing a rise in blood sugar.
  • Engaging in physical activity can help regulate blood sugar. This doesn’t have to mean time consuming strenuous exercise. Choose an activity you enjoy!
  • Seek support from friends, family, online forums, support groups, pets, etc. Talk to your dietitian or other healthcare provider if you need help finding support.
