Anorexia Nervosa
Are You or a Loved One Struggling with These Challenges?
Understanding Anorexia
Anorexia Nervosa, commonly known as anorexia, is a serious eating disorder characterized by self-imposed starvation and often weight loss.
Why is it Important to Address Anorexia?
Anorexia is more than just wanting to be thinner or smaller; it’s a complex biopsychosocial disorder that can have severe physical and psychological consequences. Malnutrition due to anorexia can lead to weakened bones, heart complications, and even life-threatening situations if left untreated. Anorexia is the second deadliest mental health diagnosis, with opioid addiction being the first. The good news is that the sooner one receives treatment the sooner their nutrition, medical and mental health status improves, resulting in a better prognosis and ability to recover and engage in life.

Bay Area Nutrition’s Approaches
Our practice offers a comprehensive range of nutrition therapy strategies designed to address the unique needs of individuals dealing with anorexia. When selecting an RDN to treat anorexia, it is important that they have advanced training, experience and participate in supervision as this disease requires an elevated skill set that general RDNs do not have. Our diverse team of experienced RDNs have the needed advanced training, certifications, experience and participate in ongoing education and supervision.
- Family Based Nutrition Therapy (FBNT): involves the family and loved ones in the nutrition rehabilitation process. For this approach the RDN works with the client and their loved ones to provide a framework of support and accountability to help the individual replete nutrition status, eating patterns and pave the road for recovery.
- Collaborative Treatment: Treating eating disorders takes a team approach. Our dietitians work in collaboration with clients, their care team (i.e. medical providers and therapists) and loved ones, to develop an optimal treatment plan to best support improved nutrition status and overall recovery.
- Trauma Informed Nutritional Counseling: We co-create a safe, supportive space where clients can openly explore their thoughts, behaviors and experiences related to food, nutrition and body image.
- Medical Nutrition Therapy: Our dietitians meet clients where they are at and provide education, plans, strategies and support to foster recovery.
- Intuitive/Mindfulness-Based Eating: This method may be utilized later in treatment as one becomes re-nourished. We work with clients to become more aware of their thoughts and actions around nutrition and eating, stress and body image to promote healthier relationships with food and body.
- Weight Inclusivity: We emphasize sustainable health and well-being practices without prioritizing weight loss or management as primary goals. Instead, our approach highlights overall wellness, supportive eating and movement, and positive relationships with food. By embracing non-diet and Health at Every Size (HAES) principles, we celebrate body diversity, combat weight discrimination and stigma, and understand how biases against certain body sizes can negatively impact nutritional, mental and physical health.
- Meal/Snack Support: We provide individual and group meal support to develop and practice supportive nutrition and eating behaviors in a variety of settings. This service is also helpful in coaching parents/loved ones on strategies to improve nutrition repletion and/or to give parents and loved ones a break from the demand of meal/snack supervision.
- Meal/Snack Planning: We meet with clients/families to develop individualized meal/eating plans that are specialized to meet the client’s nutrition repletion needs for recovery.
By integrating these approaches, our team delivers personalized treatment that addresses their unique challenges and supports their path to sustainable recovery.
