Binge Eating Disorder
Are You or a Loved One Struggling with These Challenges?
Understanding Binge Eating Disorder
Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a significant eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food within a short period, accompanied by feelings of loss of control and distress. Unlike Bulimia Nervosa, BED does not involve regular purging, however, some form of restriction is often present. Individuals with BED often experience feelings of shame, guilt, and embarrassment related to their eating habits, which impacts their nutritional, emotional and physical well-being.
Why is it Important?
Understanding BED is crucial because it affects not only physical health but also emotional stability. The disorder can lead to nutritional imbalances, digestive, cardiovascular and metabolic problems, social isolation, guilt, shame and preoccupation with food and body. Additionally, BED is often associated with mental health conditions like depression and anxiety and can affect one socially. It is important to note that BED is not a choice and ‘will power’ is not a solution. Effective treatment is necessary to address the nutritional, psychological and physical aspects of the disorder, supporting clients in achieving a healthier relationship with food and improving their overall quality of life.

Bay Area Nutrition’s Approaches
Our practice offers a comprehensive range of nutrition therapy strategies designed to address the unique needs of individuals dealing with BED. When selecting an RDN to treat BED, it is important that they have advanced training, experience and participate in supervision as this disease requires an elevated skill set that general RDNs do not have. Our diverse team of experienced RDNs have the needed advanced training, certifications, experience and participate in ongoing education and supervision.
- Trauma Informed Nutritional Counseling: We offer a safe space where clients can explore their thoughts, behaviors and experiences related to nutrition, food and body image.
- Medical Nutrition Therapy: Our dietitians meet clients where they are at and provide education, plans, strategies and support to foster recovery.
- Intuitive/Mindfulness-Based Eating: Is a method where RDNs work with clients to become more aware of their thoughts and actions around nutrition and eating, stress and body image to promote healthier relationships with food and body.
- Weight Inclusivity: We emphasize sustainable health and well-being practices without prioritizing weight loss or management as primary goals. Instead, our approach highlights overall wellness, supportive eating and movement, and positive relationships with food. By embracing non-diet and Health at Every Size (HAES) principles, we celebrate body diversity, combat weight discrimination and stigma, and understand how biases against certain body sizes can negatively impact nutritional, mental and physical health.
- Family Based Nutrition Therapy (FBNT): involves the family and loved ones in the nutrition rehabilitation process. For this approach the RDN works with the client and their loved ones to provide a framework of support and accountability to help the individual improve nutrition status, eating patterns and pave the road for recovery.
- Collaborative Treatment: Treating BED takes a team approach. Our dietitians work in collaboration with clients, their care team (i.e. medical providers and therapists) and loved ones, to develop an optimal treatment plan to best support improved nutrition status and overall recovery.
- Meal/Snack Support: We provide individual and group meal support to develop and practice supportive nutrition and eating behaviors in a variety of settings. This service is also helpful in coaching parents/loved ones on strategies to improve nutrition repletion and/or to give parents and loved ones a break from the demand of meal/snack supervision.
- Meal/Snack Planning: We meet with clients/families to develop individualized meal/eating plans that are specialized to meet the client’s nutrition repletion needs for recovery.
By integrating these approaches, our team delivers personalized treatment that addresses their unique challenges and supports their path to sustainable recovery.
