Nutrition and Neurodivergent People

Food, nutrition, and eating challenges for Neurodivergent individuals

Food, nutrition, and eating can be challenging for Neurodivergent individuals. Autistic people and those with ADHD, OCD, or related conditions, can face unique sensory, rigidity, interoception, executive function differences, and gut issues causing food, eating, and nutrition to be difficult. Sensory processing difficulties can lead to heightened sensitivities toward textures, smells, and tastes, making mealtime a stressful experience. Executive function and interoception difficulties can make it harder to remember or know when and how much to eat. Gut and digestion issues can make eating and absorbing nutrients a problem. These challenges can result in erratic eating patterns, low energy, irritability, nutritional imbalances, and emotional distress. Addressing these challenges through neuro-affirming nutrition education and support can improve nutrition intake, energy levels, overall health, and well-being.
